A magnificent assortment of rugs, pillows, and bedding, ‘The Kit Kemp Collection for Annie Selke’ is a collaboration and friendship that came together with grace, humour, and relative ease via Zoom! After many months of sketching, sampling and scheming we couldn’t be happier to see the collection launch on 7th March 2022. Furniture-wise, I love the strength of character of a good William IV piece. There are sometimes elegant decorations of lion heads; also, rosewood and zebrawood veneers were first used at this time for a striking look. French polishing came into vogue and allowed for smoother and shinier surfaces. I also try to collect Irish provincial furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries.

A lover of British art, craft and sculpture, she uses these elements to make her hotels feel unique and personal — the antithesis of anonymous, bland decorating.

I am always trying to re-create the look and feeling of them in my rooms. Kit Kemp's - Design Thread
The green marble-top console table is possibly the easiest piece to place and to use. I think a piece like that transcends time and would look good whether you live in a SoHo loft, rectory, or manor house. In the entry, flat-weave rugs were fashioned into a stair runner, antique mirror. This fantastical headboard was created by Kit for a showroom display; by a stroke of serendipity she found a lamp base that chimes perfectly with the aquatic theme. Kit sacrificed one of the four bedrooms on the first floor to create a walk-through music room housing their grand piano.

There is a rustic look to the carvings on aprons of card tables and blanket chests, often with mythical creatures and scalloped-shell motifs that I find interesting. An interior designed by Kemp features her Mythical Land wallpaper, created in collaboration with Andrew Martin. I included a section in the book on projects such as painting frames and making shell mirrors and appliqué cushions, all things that we’ve made in our design studio. They’re not perfect by any means, but they’re actually better because of it,” says Kit. Here an inspiration board comes to life around a fireplace, with designer reference materials stored in the hearth. The master bedroom has an embroidered canopy based on an 18th-century textile, a small desk where Kit writes letters by hand, and a jewel box of a dressing room hung with funny hats.
Decorative pillows feature exquisite hand-embroidered details, and the rugs are all expertly woven, knotted and tufted by hand. The living room’s lively patterns are grounded with antiques, including a striking 18th-century Spanish chest, above which hangs a portrait by Duncan Grant. ‘This home is very much a collaboration with my husband and the two of us share a love for Bloomsbury art,’ says Kit. This wisest of kitchen ideas inspired Kit to transform their large, barrel-shaped dining room overlooking the garden into the kitchen, ‘which, of course, we now live in,’ she adds. The first was prompted by a conversation between Kit and fellow designer Robert Kime. ‘He told me that he always advised making the best room in the house the kitchen – and it was like a light had been turned on,’ says Kit.
Kemp reimagined this hallway with lot 136, a circa-1750 George III mahogany side table with a later green marble top. Tucked comfortably absent in Sumner Place, this stylish boutique hotel blends into the neighbourhood. Well situated, superbly intended in English place fashion and providing great concierge, valet and room service, Range sixteen would make the perfect weekend bolt-gap. We always spend summers at home near the coast in Hampshire and Christmas on Barbados. We’ve got lazy about going anywhere new – at least we know that when we go to Barbados everything is organised, so we can just plonk! I’d love to go to India again – I want to look at some designs and furniture – and I should go to the Far East as well.
Kit finds inspiration everywhere, and has also collaborated on textiles, wallpapers and rugs. But, in the design world, she is known, more than anything, for her individual take on hotel interiors. More than 30 years ago, Kit and her husband, Tim, opened the Dorset Square Hotel in Marylebone, and since then they have established a string of others, in both London and New York. As well as the hotels, they have their own commercial laundry and a small in-house hospitality school and bakery. "You come in and see straight through to the garden," Kit says, "and that big bubble of pink makes everything feel happy." Well-versed in the demands of hotels and other high-traffic spaces, the two founders leveraged that experience to create high style, high-performance rugs that will wear well over time.

It was such fun to imagine where I would use my favorite pieces and in which kind of setting they would look best.
